Miranda House is an inveterate reader, experienced comics retailer, and freelance copy editor.
Hello! My name’s Miranda and I love reading, art, and the written word! I’ve worked in comics retail since 2015, and am entering the world of freelance editing, copy editing and proofreading. I’m based in Washington, DC, and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. If you’re looking for someone passionate and hardworking with a decade of experience in the comics/pop culture industry to proofread or clean up your projects, I’m ready to step up!
Big Planet Comics
2015 – Current
Key skills: Organization, project management, teamwork, communication, interpersonal skills
As manager at Big Planet Comics, I'm responsible for nearly every aspect of the store's function. I take and maintain orders for customers, manage all inventory and ordering, and do the majority of the store’s merchandising. I am the face most of our customers recognize and interact with on a daily basis, so customer satisfaction and communication is a priority for me. I’ve worked to arrange a wide array of events from signings with writers and artists, to local community events, to collaborating with politicians. I’ve also attended industry events such as ComicsPRO in the past, representing our store. I love comics as a medium in all forms from single issues of superhero comics to self-published zines, and I'm passionate about helping people find art, stories, and characters that resonate with and inspire them.
TOKYOPOP
2025
Key skills: Attention to detail, copy editing, proofreading, problem solving
As a freelance editor for TOKYOPOP, I worked on a variety of franchise merchandise. I checked for spelling, grammar, and tone/flow appropriate to the context of the product. I made sure translations made sense and were accurate and consistent with other iterations of the media, localizing where needed. I workshopped and edited various games and puzzles to fit with the translations of the product where possible.
Etc.
Personal and extracurricular
Outside of work, I love reading anything I can get my hands on; I’m especially a fan of gothic horror literature. I like gaming, mostly first person experiences. I enjoy sewing, crafting, and fashion. I occasionally like to cosplay, and have spent a lot of time going to various comic, gaming, and music conventions. I’ve traveled to Japan several times, and have been self-studying Japanese in my spare time, especially focusing on kanji. My goal is to eventually take the JLPT, aiming for level N3 and beyond! I have two cats with my partner, and a small aquarium of snails and shrimp.
Some standout moments in my career include hosting a double signing for the debut of Teen Titans: Raven and Mera: Tidebreaker featuring New York Times best-selling authors Kami Garcia and Danielle Paige, and breakout artist Gabriel Piccolo for DC Comics; a signing for Iron Man #1 featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist Spencer Ackerman for Marvel Comics; and collaborating with Congressman Robert Garcia on his Free Comic Book Day at the Capitol initiative.
